USAID launches program for mother and infant health
The Deputy Director of USAID and the Governor of East Java, the Head of the East Java Provincial Health Office and senior Ministry of Health officials joined officials of the U.S. Consulate and USAID at the provincial launch the United States Agency for International Development’s Expanding Maternal and Newborn Survival (USAID EMAS) Program for East Java.

Largest U.S. sponsored Education fair in Surabaya
On March 27 Education USA hosts its largest ever education fair in Surabaya from 4-8pm. The fair brought together 37 schools from across the U.S. for a day of seminars and educational counseling open to the public. Participants, numbering around 1,000 came from all over east Java and even Lombok seeking information on programs and scholarships.

American Volunteers come together supporting Malang street children
Over a long weekend of group activities, workshops, and theater, American sponsored volunteers came together in Batu and Malang to empower street children and encourage their education. “Camp Hope,” sponsored by the RELO office and in cooperation with JKJT, UMM, and Consulate Surabaya culminated in a public performance to an audience of over 500 which provided a platform for 35 street kids to not only practice their English language skills but also to share their life stories through various forms of art such as music, drama, digital videos and poems.

Deputy Chief of Mission holds civic engagement programs in Surabaya and Malang
The Deputy Chief of Mission Ted Osius visited Malang and Surabaya in March 2012 to meet with educators and civic leaders to engage on issues ranging from food security and corruption, to education opportunities, and ways to protect the environment.

U.S. Ambassador Scot A. Marciel visited the mausoleum of late president and famed national leader of Indonesia Gus Dur in Jombang.
The ambassador paid his respects to the deceased leader and placed flowers upon his grave alongside the Kiyai Gus Sholahuddin Wahid at Pesantren Tebuireng Jombang. While there, Ambassador Marciel held a discussion with santri on issues of tolerance in Indonesia and the U.S. and spoke to students from University of Darul Ulum about developing entrepreneurship. He also visited the Trowulan Museum to see ancient artifacts and learn more about Indonesia’s long history.

U.S. Consulate visits Banyuwangi schools
On February 2-3 2012, Public Affairs Officer Emily Norris visited Banyuwangi to share information about U.S. education and scholarships with local residents, teachers, and students. Starting with visits to Peace Corps school SMA 1 , Ms. Norris talked about U.S. scholarships for 10th and 11th graders to do a full year of study at an American high school through the YES program (Youth Exchange and Study in cooperation with Yayasan Bina Antar Budaya) and how to find out information to continue college in the U.S. through Education USA (http://www.educationusa.or.id/).
