Visiting Gresik and Lamogan to develop economic and educational partnership
On December 21th, Political Economics Chief Michelle Morales traveled to Lamogan and Gresik to learn about the potential for business investment in these two high performing cities and visit Pesantren Sunan Drajat. This visit represents the economic partnership and connections growing out of the Comprehensive Partnership between Indonesia and the U.S. as they both look to ways to mutually benefit from expanding economic ties.

U.S. presents Peace Through Commerce Medal to Putra Sampoerna
On December 12th, Commerce Department Under Secretary for International Trade Sanchez presented Putra Sampoerna with the Peace through Commerce Medal at the bilateral “Ease of Doing Business Symposium” in Bali. The Under Secretary also spoke about improving the business climate and business regulation in Indonesia.

U.S. mission works with partners to stop human trafficking
The U.S. Consulate General, in partnership with the Sheraton and KPI (Koalisi Perempuan Indonesia) is working on a three day campaign of awareness to combat Trafficking in Persons. Indonesia is a major source country, and to a much lesser extent a destination and transit country for women, children, and men who are subjected to sex trafficking and forced labor. Each of Indonesia’s 33 provinces is a source and destination of trafficking, with the most significant source areas being Java, West Kalimantan, Lampung, North Sumatra, and South Sumatra. To combat this, partners have come together in the three day “Satu Hati” program sponsored by the Sheraton hotel and the U.S. Consulate General in Surabaya.

U.S. Consulate General celebrates thanksgiving through culture, education and service
In celebration of Thanksgiving, November 24th, 2011, the U.S. Consulate general hosted several events. These included receptions for journalists, educators, Fulbright scholars and teacher, underprivileged youth, and Peace Corps volunteers. Consul General stressing the importance of sharing and send our gratitude in this Thanksgiving Day. “Thanksgiving is a time for reflection about what we have to be thankful for, a time to spend with our families, and a time to give back to society and help those in need,” said U.S. Consul General Kristen F. Bauer.

THE PRESIDENT: Well, I just want to make a brief statement. This is a remarkable example of the trade investment and commercial opportunities that exist in the Asia Pacific region. For the last several days I’ve been talking about how we have to make sure that we’ve got a presence in this region, that it can result directly in jobs at home. And what we see here -- a multibillion-dollar deal between Lion Air -- one of the fastest-growing airlines not just in the region, but in the world -- and Boeing is going to result in over 100,000 jobs back in the United States of America, over a long period of time.

USAID IUWASH program expands access to sanitation and clean water in East Java On the 26th of October, the government of East Java and USAID witnessed the signing of five cooperation with the Indonesia Leadership Local Government Urban Water Sanitation and Hygiene (IUWASH) for the project expanded access to drinking water and sanitation over the period 2011-2015.

Dancing to Connect with Battery Dance in Makassar
The U.S. Embassy and U.S. Consulate General hosted Battery Dance Company for a dance-program tour in Indonesia October 9-17, 2011. During their Indonesia 2011 tour, Battery Dance Company traveled to Jakarta and Makassar to conduct performances; artist-to-artist exchanges; educational programs, including workshops, lecture-demonstrations, and master classes; and community and press events.
