Duta Budaya AS Emily Elbert Satukan Indonesia dan Amerika Lewat Musik
American musician Emily Elbert traveled to Surabaya from January 17-19tj where she shared music and experiences with people all over East Java.
Emily performed at UNAIR’s American Corner and UNESA’s faculty of music where she spoke to students about developing their musical expertise. In her performance at SMKN 9 in Surabaya with an audience of over 700 students, she collaborated with the highschool band to play her original songs with a mixture of traditional gamelan instruments. She performed live on radio and television including Jtrax, hardrock FM, and Gen FM where she shared what inspires her music and her experience as a young musician in the U.S.
Every year the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Indonesia arrange cultural envoy programs to share American culture with partners and counterparts in Indonesia. Ms. Elbert is the first envoy for 2012. Through this program, Emily Elbert will meet with Indonesian artists and musicians across Java to share her perspective on women in American arts and music; she will discuss her career and accomplishments as a women musician and singer.
“Music is a great way to bridge cultures and create connections between people,” said U.S. Consul General Kristen F. Bauer at the concert she hosted for over 100 high school students at her residence on January 17th. “We hope this program, and other cultural programs like this, can continue to foster positive relations between Indonesia and the U.S. as part of the Comprehensive Partnership between our two nations.”
The U.S. target of opportunity speaker programs like this one on “Women in American Arts and Music” seeks to bring American experts from a variety of fields and backgrounds to engage international audiences. The program offers foreign publics the opportunity to hear about an American perspective on key issues in the U.S.-Indonesia bilateral relationship. Emily Elbert led interactive discussion sessions related to women in American arts and music, with a specific emphasis on music production and the music industry. After Surabaya, she continued on to Jakarta for a weekend program at the one year anniversary of the @america cultural facility.
