Arrests and Detentions
If an American citizen is detained by Indonesian authorities, the Consulate does all it can to assist. If you are arrested, you should ask the authorities to notify the U.S. Consulate immediately. The U.S. Consulate cannot get you out of jail (when you are in a foreign country, you are subject to its laws). However, a representative from the Consulate or Consular Agency (if in Bali) will visit you, provide you with a list of local attorneys and, if you agree to sign a Privacy Act Waiver, can contact family and friends on your behalf. After normal business hours, call the Consulate Duty Officer at 62-81-1334-183; dailing from within Indonesia call (081)-1334-183.
