Consul General Hosts Discussion on Sec. Clinton’s Speech on Internet Freedom
Consul General Caryn McClelland hosted an event at her home to watch and discuss US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s speech on internet freedom. The audience of journalism, communication, and IT students, as well as bloggers watched the Secretary’s speech and then discussed what internet freedom means in Indonesia and around the world. They discussed the challenge of balancing freedom with protecting people from hate speech, pornography, terrorism, and other destructive topics. Also, they debated the interpretation of Indonesia’ internet laws against defammation. The entire group of participants agreed on one topic, however, and that was that internet freedom is a basic freedom that people should be entitled to around the globe.
