    MLK-Gus Dur Photo Exhibit-Celebrating legacies of tolerance

    The Consulate General Surabaya has hosted over 230 students and teachers to a 40 photo exhibit featuring American civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr., and former Indonesian president and cleric, Gus Dur. Both men fought tirelessly for minority rights and for more inclusive democracies. The photo exhibit is open to the public and will run until March 15.

    Consul General, Joaquin Monserrate, and Hakim Jayli, a member of the Gus Durian Society, cut the ribbon to officially open the MLK-Gus Dur photo exhibit. The Gus Durian Society was formed in memory of former Indonesian president, Abdurrahman Wahid, aka Gus Dur, to promote the values he espoused during his life. Those values include a pluralist democracy, tolerance and the celebration of diversity. Those same values were supported and championed by MLK and this photo exhibit celebrates both leaders’ legacies.

    The Ambassador, Alissa Wahid and Emha Najib spoke about Martin Luther King Jr's and Gus Dur's legacies of pluralism, diversity and minority rights. The audience included Lily Wahid, Gus Dur’s sister and DPR member, Bupatis from Congen’s district and the Sultan of Ternate. Many of the 80+ attendees contributed anecdotes about Gus Dur and the direction of pluralism in Indonesia.

    Ambassador and Consul General Visit Sumbawa

    Ambassador Scot Marciel and Consul General Joaquin Monserrate visited with representatives from PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara on February 20, 2013. PT Newmont operates a copper and gold mine on the island of Sumbawa, Nusa Tenggara Barat. The Ambassador and CG toured the mine itself and community projects that Newmont supports. They visited a dragon fruit cultivation project where they met with members of the local media and several Sumbawan community leaders to learn more about Newmont’s mission of community improvement
